I hate music categorization. People always ask me, 'what kind of music do you like?'. Considering how much I'm into music in general, this should be a fun question for me, but I usually just get frustrated or answer that I like 'good' music. I was thinking about this while listening to Papua New Guniea Translations by The Future Sound of London on my walk today, which is an album length remix of an old song of theirs (this album isn't new either - I just came across it recently). The original song is pretty standard ambient techno, but the rest of the album goes way beyond that. While still keeping the same theme of the song, it jumps genres from techno to 60's psychedelia to laid back lounge. Now I'm not saying this album is some sort of landmark genre breaker, it's just a very listenable album. Still, it's a good example of what I dislike about dividing music up into categories. FSOL is considered an ambient techno (which is a fairly silly category to begin with) band, but like any good band in a genre, they transcend what's expected of them in that genre.
